Educate yourself about allergens and their sources.
All year readiness.
Most people know about the seriousness of springtime pollen, however each season brings its own unique set of airborne allergens which can make their way into your home. Don’t forget about these allergens in the fall and winter. Remove fallen leaves before they get wet, and keep gutters and drain pipes clear of leaves that can become mouldy.
Pet dander is a serious allergen for many people.
Keep your pets out of your sleeping and sitting areas (off of the bed and sofas).
Bathe them regularly. Vacuum area rugs and carpeting regularly. During high pollen season, wipe down your pet (paws too) when they come inside to keep the outdoor allergens outside.
Check and change the filter regularly.
Check and change the filter of your air purifier according to the manufacturer’s recommended schedule.
Replace your hepa filter annually and your pre- filter every 3 or 4 months depending on your unit. Your check filters indicator will light when it is time to be replace your filters. However depending on the amount of particulate matter filtered, it may need to be changed more often, so check your unit regularly even if the light did not come on.
Duct Hunting.
Mould and dirt can accumulate in your duct work.
Consider hiring a reputable duct-cleaning service that does not clean with chemicals in order to keep your duct work clean.
Hard surface flooring is optimal.
Carpeting and area rugs can hold and store allergens.
Such as dust, pet dander, pollen, and mould which can become airborne when you or your pets walk on them. Vacuum with a vacuum cleaner that has a HEPA filter and a canister that can be emptied after each use. Keep carpeting and heavy drapery out of the bedroom.
Control excess moisture in your home.
Maintain a consistent humidity level between 40-60%.
Use a dehumidifier if necessary to help reduce excess moisture in the home and use a portable air purifier to help reduce mould spores that may already be present.
