(That\u2019s okay, we\u2019re glad you\u2019re busy enjoying the benefits of your humidifier \u2013 softer skin, relief from coughs, and no new gaps forming in your hardwood flooring, woot!) However, knowing how to clean your humidifier is really important (and really easy, too).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What happens when you don\u2019t clean your humidifier?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>1. Mineral buildup, leading to poor performance<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The water that you add to the tank leaves hard mineral deposits (\u201cscale\u201d) throughout the humidifier. Scale can clog up your humidifier and hamper its performance.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In visible-mist humidifiers, scale can prevent the heating element or nebulizer from functioning. That means no mist and no humidification.<br>In invisible moisture humidifiers, scale can clog the filter and prevent moisture from getting into the room \u2013 resulting, again, in no humidification.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>2. Mold\/bacteria growth, leading to unclean moisture or odors<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Without regular cleaning, the parts of your humidifier that come into contact with water can develop mold and bacteria growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In visible mist humidifiers, mold spores and bacteria can potentially be released in the mist. Of course, bacteria and mold spores are always in the air we breathe \u2013 it\u2019s just best not to add more with an unclean humidifier.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In invisible moisture humidifiers, mold and bacteria can grow on the filter, creating an odor and preventing the filter from working properly.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Since nobody wants a humidifier that (1) doesn\u2019t work well or (2) becomes a mold hang-out spot, you absolutely need to know how to clean your humidifier regularly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"YPG6CMI\">The 3 Steps to Effective Cleaning<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The good news is, cleaning your humidifier is really easy, especially if you clean it regularly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1. Daily rinse and refill<\/strong>: A daily rinse and refill goes a long way towards preventing scale and mold\/bacteria growth in the first place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>On days when you\u2019re using your humidifier, just rinse out the humidifier and refill it with clean water.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>For a filtered humidifier, also be sure to flip over your filter (top to bottom) when you refill the tank.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2. Weekly descale and disinfect<\/strong>: During periods of time when you\u2019re using your humidifier, descale and disinfect it once a week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Clean the humidifier with white vinegar to remove mineral deposits.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Then clean the humidifier with a bleach solution to disinfect it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>See your owner\u2019s manual for the specifics of this two-part process.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If your humidifier has a filter, the filter should be replaced every 30-60 days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Never clean the filter with chemicals or soaps.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You can loosen scale on a hardened filter by soaking the filter in cool water \u2013 but know that a <a href=\"https:\/\/honeywellpluggedin.ca\/products\/filters-accessories\/?post_types=humidifier_filters\">replacement humidifier filter<\/a> will be needed soon.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If the filter has mold growth on it or smells \u201coff,\u201d replace the filter promptly.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>3.
